Water Transport Careers

Water transport includes; international and coastal shipping, passenger services, services provided by port company workers such as harbour pilots or tug-boats and onshore work such as the loading and unloading of vessels.
Check-in Agent
Check-in agents check passengers onto flights and ferry crossings, take their tickets and luggage, and give them boarding passes, or assist them to use self-check systems. If they work in an airport, they may also meet and dispatch aircraft.
Crane Operator
Crane operators use cranes for lifting and moving objects such as parts of buildings, water tanks, concrete panels, building equipment, boats or machinery. There are many types and sizes of cranes operating in a wide variety of industries.
Deckhand (Commercial Inshore Vessel)
Deckhands assist inshore launchmasters in the operation of vessels such as harbour ferries and charter boats.
Dredge Operator
Dredge operators operate digging equipment or navigate vessels that deepen waterways, reclaim land, or mine sand or gravel.
Fork-Lift Operator
Fork-lift operators operate vehicles that have a lifting platform for shifting and stacking heavy articles such as pallets (portable platforms used for storing and moving cargo), bales, crates, containers or cartons.
Harbour Pilot
Harbour pilots guide ships in and out of harbours and through dangerous or difficult waterways.
Inshore Launchmaster
Inshore launchmasters are in charge of vessels used for carrying passengers, motor vehicles or goods across rivers, harbours, lakes and coastal waters.
Marine Engineer
Marine engineers build, maintain, service and repair engines, as well as mechanical and electronic equipment on board a variety of vessels.
Maritime Hospitality Crew Member
Maritime hospitality crew members take care of passengers on board ferries and charter boats.
Merchant Navy Deck Officer
Merchant navy deck officers are second in charge on a ship. They are responsible for helping the captain run and navigate the ship, and loading and discharging cargo.
Radio Operator
Radio operators monitor, receive and send messages using radio equipment.
Ship's Master
Ship's masters are in charge of a ship, its crew and any passengers or cargo it is carrying, at sea and in port.
Stevedore
Stevedores operate a variety of heavy machinery to load, unload, tally and stow the cargo of a ship.
Tug Master
Tug masters are in command of the crew on tugboats, which assist ships to move in and out of harbours and through dangerous or difficult waterways.
