Maritime Hospitality Crew Member
Tasks & duties

Maritime hospitality crew members may do some or all of the following:
-
serve food and drinks to passengers
-
display and maintain levels of stock
-
clean and tidy the vessel
-
provide information and commentary on the journey for passengers
-
assist with the safe loading and storage of passengers' baggage on small vessels
-
help passengers board and depart the vessel
-
load and unload cargo
-
carry out emergency procedures when necessary
-
train and supervise other staff
-
organise and oversee activities such as kayaking
Skills & knowledge

Maritime hospitality crew members need to have:
-
customer service skills
-
knowledge of the services their organisation provides such as timetable and destination information
-
knowledge of tourist attractions and activities in the area
-
knowledge of safety at sea, first aid and emergency procedures
-
knowledge of hygiene and cleaning methods
-
cash handling and basic maths skills
-
good communication skills
-
organisational ability
Entry requirements
There are no specific requirements to become a hospitality crew member, but experience in a customer service role is preferred.
Secondary education
There are no specific secondary education requirements to become a maritime hospitality crew member; however, School Certificate or NCEA equivalent English and maths may be preferred by some employers.
Training on the job
Maritime hospitality crew members receive on-the-job training and may work towards the National Certificate in Maritime (Commercial Inshore Passenger Vessel Hospitality Crew Member) Level 2.
Useful experience
Useful experience for hospitality crew members includes customer service or hospitality work, and experience at sea.
