Inshore Launchmaster

Inshore launchmasters are in charge of vessels used for carrying passengers, motor vehicles or goods across rivers, harbours, lakes and coastal waters.

 

Tasks & duties

Inshore launchmasters may do some or all of the following:

  • operate a commercial vessel used for carrying passengers, motor vehicles or goods
  • supervise the safe loading, unloading and stowing of cargo
  • ensure the safety of passengers, crew and goods
  • control the speed, position and course of the vessel
  • arrange repairs, fuel and supplies for the vessel
  • organise the activities of the crew
  • direct safety operations if there is an emergency
  • transfer harbour pilots to and from ships
  • serve passengers on the vessel
  • do general maintenance on the vessel
  • report any observed navigational hazards to authorities
  • write and update records for Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) requirements
  • ensure the vessel is kept in a clean, tidy and safe condition

 

Skills & knowledge

Inshore launchmasters need to have: 

  • knowledge of local tides, waters, marine hazards and weather conditions
  • navigational skills
  • skill using radio communications equipment
  • knowledge of electronics and computers used with the ships' engines
  • knowledge of basic mechanics and general vessel maintenance
  • planning and organisational skills
  • decision-making ability
  • good communication and people skills
  • general knowledge of maths and physics

 

Entry requirements

To become an inshore launchmaster you must be at least 18 years old. You also need an Inshore Launchmaster Certificate and at least 18 months sea time. An engineering qualification such as the Marine Engineer Class 5 Certificate may also be required, depending on the engine power of the boat you work on.

 

Secondary education

There are no specific secondary education requirements, but useful subjects include English, maths and physics.

 

Training on the job

Skills are gained on the job.

 

Useful experience

Any kind of seagoing and engineering experience is useful, including:

  • deckhand work
  • service in the Navy
  • work as a ship's officer
  • work as a shipwright or boat builder
  • work as a mechanic or engineer
