Ship's Master
Tasks & duties

Ship's masters may do some or all of the following:
-
are responsible for the safety and welfare of everybody who sails on the ship
-
are responsible for the vessel and its cargo
-
are responsible for the activities of the crew
-
are responsible for planning the ship's route
-
ensure all maritime laws, rules and regulations are followed
-
ensure the speed, position and course of the ship are correct
-
ensure records are kept of events, weather conditions and the ship's position
-
ensure repairs, fuel and supplies for the ship are arranged
-
ensure the vessel is maintained
-
ensure the loading, unloading and stowing of cargo is supervised
-
oversee the harbour pilot when entering and leaving ports
-
have responsibility for the ship at all times
Specialisations
Ship's masters may specialise in sailing a particular size or type of vessel such as a petrol tanker, container ship, cruise ship, super yacht or passenger ferry.
Skills & knowledge

Ship's masters need to have:
-
knowledge of the requirements for running and handling a ship
-
a sound technical understanding of the ship and its equipment
-
knowledge of tides, waters, coastlines, marine hazards and the weather, and how these vary depending on where their vessel is
-
knowledge of international maritime laws and Maritime New Zealand requirements
-
navigational skills
-
communication skills, and the ability to lead and manage a crew
-
knowledge of safety procedures and methods such as fire-fighting, rescue, and collision prevention
-
planning and organisational skills
-
decision-making ability
-
maths skills
-
computer skills
-
writing skills
Entry requirements
To become a ship's master you need to complete a Master of a Foreign Going Ship Certificate. To do this you need to have progressed through the deck officer positions (third mate, second mate to first mate) and complete master training on the job, which includes sitting exams through the New Zealand Maritime School.

You also need to pass a medical examination and hold a New Zealand Medical Licence, and must have normal colour vision. You must not have a criminal record.
Secondary education
At least Sixth Form Certificate or NCEA equivalent English and maths is needed to enter this job, although Bursary or NCEA equivalent is preferred.
Useful experience
Work as a deckhand, service in the Navy or any experience at sea or on ships is useful for ship's masters.
