Seafood Careers
The seafood industry involves; harvesting fish from deep-sea or inshore fishing, aquaculture – growing and harvesting fish and shellfish in marine farms, and processing fish and shellfish (at sea or on shore).
- Deckhand (Fishing)
- Fishing deckhands shoot (cast out) and haul in the nets, lines or pots on inshore and deep-sea fishing vessels. They may also process the fish and load it into the freezer.
- Deep-sea Fishing Skipper
- Fishing skippers are responsible for the running of a fishing boat, which ranges from navigating the vessel and organising the crew to catching and processing fish.
- Deep Sea Vessel Manager
- Vessel managers plan, organise and co-ordinate the operations and crew of one or more fishing boats.
- Farm Boat Skipper
- Farm boat skipper oversee and manage small vessels and crew. They are responsible for growing and harvesting fish, mussels, oysters or other shellfish in specially prepared areas.
- Fish Processor
- Fish processor work in the factory of a deep-sea fishing vessel to prepare seafood and seafood products for sale.
- Fish Shop Worker
- Fish shop workers prepare and sell fish and other seafood. They may also advise customers on ways to cook it.
- Fishery Officer
- Fishery officers gather information on all aspects of the fishing industry and enforce fisheries laws.
- Fishing Boat Skipper

- Marine Engineer
- Marine engineers build, maintain, service and repair engines, as well as mechanical and electronic equipment on board a variety of vessels.

- Marine Farm Worker

- Onshore Factory Hand
- Onshore factory hand prepare seafood and seafood products for sale. This includes skinning, filleting, trimming and packing the seafood.
- Physical Oceanographer
- Physical oceanographers study ocean currents, tides and circulation.
- Seafood Diver
- Divers work underwater and do a variety of tasks such as construction work, rescuing property from wrecked ships, commercial seafood gathering, photography, exploration and police work, and dive instructing. They may work close to shore (inshore), out at sea (offshore), or in lakes or rivers.
- Seafood Factory Supervisor
- Seafood factory supervisors organise and control the processing of fish in a seafood factory.
- Seafood Processor (At-Sea)
