Marine Farm Worker
Tasks & duties
- prepare sacks, ropes, seabeds, nets or cages for fish and shellfish

- tighten, clean and mend lines, ropes and nets on the marine farm
- scatter baby shellfish on the prepared areas or fix them to hanging ropes
- care for and maintain the growing shellfish or fish
- feed the fish
- harvest the produce
- stow the produce
- dive to clear any debris or dead fish from the fish pens
- drive and navigate boats
- maintain marine farm equipment.
Skills & knowledge

- knowledge of growing and harvesting fish or shellfish
- practical skills such as skill in tying knots and splicing ropes
- boat handling and navigational skills, including the ability to read charts and use a compass
- diving skills
- an awareness of health and safety practices
- basic mechanical skills
- communication skills
- time management skills.
Entry requirements
There are no specific requirements to become a marine farm worker, as skills are gained on the job. However, some employers prefer their staff to have had experience at sea and completed a diving ticket.
Secondary education
School Certificate or NCEA equivalent English and maths may be useful.
Training on the job
Marine farm workers can gain a National Certificate in Aquaculture by completing unit standards while working. For further information contact the NZ Seafood Industry Training Organisation.
