Seafood Supervisor (At-sea)
Tasks & duties

- supervise workers on the factory line
- oversee all processing procedures on the factory floor
- check the quality of the fish
- ensure hygiene and safety regulations are met
- write reports on hygiene and production for the company and the Ministry of Fisheries
- check machinery and report any faults
- make sure seafood processors are properly trained
- report to the skipper and the first mate on products in the freezer.
At-sea seafood supervisors also work on the factory line operating machinery, sorting, filleting, trimming, weighing, packing or freezing fish.
Skills & knowledge
- knowledge about different species of fish and how they are processed to market requirements
- good knife-handling skills for filleting and trimming fish
- skill sorting, weighing and packing fish
- the ability to stack a freezer
- the ability to operate and clean the machinery used for seafood processing
- an understanding of safety, health and hygiene regulations
- good people skills as they may work and live with the same people on a boat for at least six weeks
- good leadership and communication skills
- problem-solving skills
- record-keeping and time management skills
- computer skills are useful for writing reports.
Entry requirements
To become an at-sea seafood supervisor you need to have significant industry experience working as a deckhand, seafood processor or assistant seafood factory manager.
Training on the job
At-sea seafood supervisors may work towards a National Certificate in Seafood Vessel Operations (At-sea Processing) while working. For further information contact the NZ Seafood Industry Training Organisation.
