Sand Flounder

Average size 25-35 cm. Colour brownish to greenish grey, blind side white. Adult diamond-shaped, but juveniles more rounded and easily confused with youg yellowbelly flounders. Distinguished from yellowbelly by larger eyes, colour, and adult angular shape. Found throughout New Zealand coastal waters down to 100 m. Caught by trawl and set net. Available throughout the year. The most abundant flounder species in New Zealand. A small to moderate resource, with an annual yield of perhaps 100 to 2000 tonnes.
