Chemistry
The science that deals with the properties of organic and inorganic substances and their interactions with other organic and inorganic substances. In the study of matter, chemistry also investigates the movement of electrons. Because of the diversity of matter, which is mostly composed of different combinations of atoms, chemists often study how atoms of different chemical elements interact to form molecules and how molecules interact with each other.
- Element Symbols
- It's easier to navigate the periodic table and write chemical equations and formulae once you know the symbols for the elements.
- Periodic Table of the Elements
- The periodic "law" of chemistry recognises that properties of the chemical elements are periodic functions of their atomic number (that is, the number of protons within the element's atomic nucleus). The periodic table is an arrangement of the chemical elements ordered by atomic number in columns (groups) and rows (periods) presented so as to emphasize their periodic properties.
- Patterns of Behaviour
- Metals will react with acids, water, and oxygen.
- Classifying Materials
- All the substances you know can be sorted into groups. Solid, liquid and gas are the 3 states of matter. Each state has different properties. These different properties are due to the way in which the particles are arranged. Some substances exist naturally in all three states - solid, liquid, and gas.
