Barracouta

Average length 60-90 cm, averge weight 1-3 kg. Dark blue back, silver sides and belly, and smooth skin. Can be distinguished from the related gemfish by a single lateral line. Widespread in New Zealand coastal waters, abundant in some localities, with the main grounds around the South Island to depths of 200 metres. Caught mainly by trawling, and available all year round. A very large resource capable of an annual yield of about 20,000-40,000 tonnes.
