Work in public and border protection, and emergency services may involve; protecting or minimising harm to people, property and the environment, enforcing laws and regulations, monitoring New Zealand’s borders, dealing with emergency situations and working with and rehabilitating offenders.
- Ambulance Officer
- Ambulance officers attend to ill and injured people at accident sites or in medical emergencies, and transport them to hospitals and other suitable medical facilities. They also provide non-urgent transport for patients between hospitals and from homes to hospitals.
- Animal Control Officer
- Animal control officers enforce laws and regulations that deal with animals and their owners. They ensure that people control their animals so they do not create problems for others.
- Biosecurity Officer
- Biosecurity officers check areas of land for harmful animals or plants and arrange for their destruction or control.
- Corrections Officer
- Corrections officers are responsible for the safe, secure and humane containment of prisoners. They manage prisoners' sentence plans and rehabilitation programmes to help reduce reoffending.
- Criminal Justice Psychologist
- Criminal justice psychologists work with offenders to assess and provide treatment to help them make changes in their lives and reduce the risk of reoffending.
- Criminologist
- Criminologists study criminal behaviour and its causes, and the effects of crime on victims, the community, policing and the criminal justice system. They may work in a policy and/or research role within a justice-related organisation, and may also teach.
- Customs Officer
- Customs officers control, monitor and administer the entry and departure of goods, vessels and people to and from New Zealand.
- Detective
- Detectives investigate crimes and arrest suspected criminals.
- Emergency Management Officer
- Emergency management officers provide communities with a co-ordinated response plan for potential emergencies such as floods, earthquakes and major transportation incidents. They also help communities to recover from such events.
- Environmental Health Officer
- Environmental health officers assess registered premises (such as food outlets, hairdressing salons), ensure their compliance with regulations, and grant licences to them. They also investigate environmental problems that could endanger public health, including monitoring noise control of industrial sites, overcrowding in housing, contaminated water, air quality and rubbish accumulation.
- Firefighter
- Firefighters educate the public about fire safety and fire prevention, and control and put out fires.
- Fishery Officer
- Fishery officers gather information on all aspects of the fishing industry and enforce fisheries laws.
- Health and Safety Inspector
- Health and safety inspectors investigate incidents, accidents and complaints at workplaces. They also advise workers and employers on safe and healthy work practices and ensure compliance with legislation.
- Immigration Officer
- Immigration officers control the entry of people from other countries into New Zealand and administer visas and residency applications according to immigration laws and policies.
- Loss Prevention Officer
- Loss prevention officers work in retail shops and businesses to prevent theft and crime. They operate surveillance equipment and may work in plain clothes.
- Parking Warden
- Parking wardens are responsible for issuing infringement notices (fines) for illegal parking and vehicle offences such as unregistered cars.
- Personal Protection Officer
- Personal protection officers provide for the personal safety of a client, either as part of the Diplomatic Protection Squad or in the private sector.
- Police Officer
- Police officers keep law and order in the community. They work to prevent and solve crime, keep the peace and respond to criminal activities and emergencies.
- Prison Programme Co-ordinator
- Prison programme co-ordinators plan and organise the delivery of rehabilitation and education programmes in prisons.
- Private Investigator
- Private investigators seek, obtain and supply information for clients. They may conduct investigations for clients seeking personal information, information that is crime-related or difficult to locate, or missing persons.
- Probation Officer
- Probation officers prepare reports on criminal cases for courts. They manage the sentences of parolees and supervise community-based offenders.
- Quarantine Inspector
- Quarantine inspectors control the entry of agricultural and horticultural produce, plants and animals into New Zealand, and identify and control biosecurity risks arriving at New Zealand's borders.
- Security Officer
- Security officers patrol or guard an area or building to prevent fire, trespassing, theft or vandalism.
- Security Systems Technician
- Security systems technicians install and maintain security systems.
