Prison Programme Co-ordinator
Tasks & duties

Prison programme co-ordinators may do some or all of the following:

plan education and rehabilitation programmes for prisoners
-
supervise other prison tutors
-
plan programme timetables
-
evaluate the progress of prisoners
-
plan and present lessons
-
liaise with community organisations
-
prepare monthly reports on the progress of programmes
Skills & knowledge
Prison programme co-ordinators need to have:
-
knowledge of different teaching methods
-
knowledge of how to implement counselling and education programmes in areas such as anger management, and alcohol and drug dependency
-
knowledge of psychology and/or criminology
-
good management and problem-solving skills
-
administration skills
-
counselling skills
-
good oral and written communication skills
-
computer skills
Entry requirements
To become a prison programme co-ordinator you are usually required to have a tertiary qualification in education studies or teaching.
Secondary education
A tertiary entrance qualification is needed to enter further training.
Tertiary education
Training in criminology or psychology is useful.
Training on the job
Skills are gained on the job. However, prison programme co-ordinators also attend courses to learn about prison procedures and security awareness.
Useful experience
Experience in teaching adults, counselling, administration or management is useful for prison programme co-ordinators.
