Loss Prevention Officer

Loss prevention officers work in retail shops and businesses to prevent theft and crime. They operate surveillance equipment and may work in plain clothes.

 

Tasks & duties

Loss prevention officers may do some or all of the following:

  • plan crime-prevention strategies
  • monitor shops using a range of techniques such as floor-walking and operating security camera systems
  • detect and stop shoplifters
  • contact the Police to interview suspected shoplifters
  • carry out random bag checks
  • fill out reports about theft
  • assist in stocktaking
  • carry out weekly stocktakes on high-risk products such as electronic items
  • train staff to be security-conscious
  • monitor cash on premises
  • monitor stock delivery
  • collect change from and deposit cash to a bank
  • perform security checks on staff members

 

Skills & knowledge

Loss prevention officers need to have:

  • knowledge of legislation relating to theft and arrest
  • knowledge of surveillance observation methods and equipment
  • skill in detecting shoplifters and preventing theft
  • knowledge of credit and financing
  • good communication skills, including the ability to deal with people from different backgrounds and cultures
  • good planning and organisational ability
  • administrative and computer skills

 

Entry requirements

To become a loss prevention officer you need to be at least 18 years old, have a drivers licence and must undergo a police screening process.

 

Secondary education

There are no specific educational requirements for loss prevention officers, but Sixth Form Certificate or NCEA equivalent English and maths are useful.

 

Tertiary education

It is useful to have some formal training in security awareness and procedures.

 

Training on the job

Skills are gained on the job. Most security companies offer in-house courses and training for loss prevention officers.

 

Useful experience

Experience working in retail and security, and work that involves dealing with the public is useful for loss prevention officers. A first aid course may also be an advantage.
