Writing and Publishing Careers

People working in the writing and publishing industry may research, write, publish and distribute news, information and entertainment. The type of work can include; creative writing, writing news or feature articles, writing technical manuals or helping people to understand complex information, design and layout of publications, in print and on the Internet and managing the production of publications.
Author
Authors write stories, scripts, poems and plays for publication or production, to entertain and inform people.
Communication Manager
Communication managers are responsible for promoting an organisation's image and reputation to the public, and for informing staff and clients about what is happening within the organisation.
Communication Officer
Communication officers assist in promoting the products, services and public image of an organisation.
Copywriter
Copywriters come up with ideas and write the content for different advertising mediums such as television, film, radio, magazines, CD-ROMs, brochures, websites and newspapers.
Newspaper/Magazine Editor
Newspaper and magazine editors manage editorial staff and their newspaper or magazine business, and direct the preparation of articles for the newspaper or magazine.
Press Secretary
Press secretaries advise ministers on how to deal with the media, and help them to communicate government policy and decisions to the wider public.
Print Journalist
Print journalists collect information and write stories about events and topics of interest for publication in newspapers, magazines or on the Internet.
Publishing Editor
Publishing editors manage the selection, design, editing and printing processes for publications such as books, magazines, journals and resource materials. Most publishing editors also assist in the marketing and distribution of publications, and may manage these areas.
Radio/Television Journalist
Radio and television journalists gather and present news, including information about current and historical events, things that have changed in the world and other topics of interest.
Reviewer/Critic
Reviewers/critics write about and give an opinion on artistic works or performances such as books, movies, and music, stage or television productions.
Sub-editor
Sub-editors check magazine, journal or newspaper articles, books, Internet content or other resources and prepare them for publication. They may also design pages and arrange illustrations.
Technical Communicator
Technical communicators develop and write documents, such as computer software user manuals, business policies, procedures and reports, and content for intranets and the Internet, and present it so users can easily understand it.
