Authors may do some or all of the following:

choose and research topics to write about

write, revise and rewrite their material

prepare the work for publication and send it to a publisher or producer

discuss further revisions with an editor

attend book launches and publicity events

give public readings

run writing classes
Specialisations
Authors who write books may specialise in either non-fiction or fiction, and then a particular genre within that area. For example, authors in fiction might specialise in writing science fiction, romance or crime novels.
They may also specialise in a certain type of writing, such as screenplays, short stories or poetry.

Authors need to have:

Entry requirements
To become an author you must be able to persevere with your writing and you may have to practise your writing by setting aside a certain amount of time each day. You may also have to rewrite your work several times.
To get published, most authors need to first present their ideas or writing to publishers or literary agents.
Secondary education
There are no specific secondary education requirements to become an author, but English is useful.
Tertiary education
Most universities and polytechnics in New Zealand offer creative writing courses.
Training on the job
Some authors gain skills by working with a more experienced author who acts as a mentor. Others get experience by working in areas that require writing skills – such as journalism, copywriting or communications.
