Infrastructure Careers
Work in infrastructure involves the planning, design, construction or repair of infrastructure such as; roads, pavements, bridges, tunnels, ports or airport runways, the generation, transmission and supply of electricity
water treatment, distribution and drainage systems.
- Civil Engineer
- Civil engineers plan, design and supervise the construction and repair of infrastructure such as buildings, roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, water systems, wastewater treatment plants and wharves.
- Civil Engineering Technician
- Civil engineering technicians plan the technical details for building and repairing roads, bridges, buildings and other similar structures.
- Coastal Engineer
- Coastal engineers study coastal and river systems, and are involved in protection and erosion work. They design coastal structures such as beaches, sea walls, marinas and ports, and assess the environmental effects these developments may have.
- Construction Site Manager
- Construction site managers organise and supervise the building and repair of roads, bridges, buildings, tunnels, dams and wharves.
- Drainlayer
- Drainlayers lay and repair sewage and storm water drains, and put in and repair waste water treatment systems.
- Dredge Operator
- Dredge operators operate digging equipment or navigate vessels that deepen waterways, reclaim land, or mine sand or gravel.
- Earthmoving Machine Operator
- Earthmoving machine operators use digging machines (such as bulldozers, graders or hydraulic excavators) to remove, shape or level the ground.
- Electric Cable Jointer
- Electric cable jointers join and test power cables.
- Electrical Engineer
- Electrical engineers specify, design and supervise the construction or manufacture of systems and equipment that produce, distribute and/or use electricity. They also maintain, operate and manage these systems and equipment.
- Electrical Engineering Technician
- Electrical engineering technicians interpret designs and technical instructions from an electrical engineer and ensure that they are accurately implemented. They also develop, install, test and maintain equipment that produces, transmits or uses power.
- Electrical Fitter
- Electrical fitters install, maintain and repair electrical wiring and electrical equipment in power stations, substations and other sites.
- Electrician
- Electricians install, maintain and repair electrical wiring and equipment.
- Engineering Draughts Person
- Engineering draughts people make plans and drawings of structures or machines.
- Environmental Engineer
- Environmental engineers plan, design and supervise construction of public infrastructure such as wastewater treatment plants, landfills, and storm water and river-control works.
- Land Surveyor
- Land surveyors map the Earth's surface to determine boundaries, locations, topographic features and man-made structures.
- Line Mechanic
- Line mechanics install, repair and maintain overhead and underground lines.
- Meter Reader
- Meter readers check and read electricity, water and gas meters.
- Roading Construction Worker
- Roading construction workers use machines and equipment to apply chip seal, asphalt and other materials to make surfaces such as roads, airport runways and driveways.
- Roading Engineer
- Roading engineers design, plan and supervise the building and repair of structures such as roads, motorways, car parks, pavements, tunnels, freight terminals and traffic islands. Roading engineers may also research driver behaviour and road safety.
- Roadmarker
- Roadmarkers use machines and equipment to apply markings to roads and other surfaces such as airport runways, factory floors, car parks and sports courts.
- Structural Engineer
- Structural engineers analyse, design and manage the construction of a range of load-bearing structures such as houses, commercial buildings, sports stadiums, hospitals, bridges and telecommunications towers.
- Survey Assistant
- Survey assistants help a land surveyor or survey technician with the practical tasks involved in measuring land for maps and plans.
- Survey Technician
- Survey technicians measure and study land under the direction of a land surveyor or engineer.
- Telecommunications Engineer
- Telecommunications engineers study, design, test and build telecommunications networks, such as cellphone and Internet-related hardware, for communication systems.
- Telecommunications Technician
- Telecommunications technicians install, maintain and repair electronic communications equipment in telecommunication networks and Internet supply systems.
- Water/Waste Water Treatment Operator
- Water/waste water treatment operators operate water treatment equipment and control the process that purifies rain, ground and river water for human and industrial use. They also control the treatment and disposal of sewage and industrial waste water.
