Tasks & duties

Earthmoving machine operators:
-
talk to clients about what excavation needs to be done
-
organise quotes for jobs
-
study instructions, plans and diagrams
-
locate underground services such as pipes and wires
-
select and connect digging attachments to the machine
-
operate the vehicle and attachments
-
remove topsoil, trees and rocks
-
load removed materials onto trucks
-
level the ground if necessary
-
maintain and refuel the earthmoving vehicle
-
ensure health and safety regulations are met
-
check that extra fuel for the machinery is on-site
Skills & knowledge

Earthmoving machine operators need to have:
-
skill in operating and maintaining heavy machines
-
knowledge of the different types of digging attachments
-
knowledge of safe work practises and health and safety regulations
-
the ability to read plans
-
listening skills and the ability to follow instructions
-
good communication skills
-
problem-solving skills
Self-employed earthmoving machine operators also need to have business skills.
Entry requirements
To become an earthmoving machine operator you need to have a heavy vehicle licence (classes 2-5, depending on the vehicle) with T, W, R (tracks, wheels, rollers) endorsements. Further information on driver licensing is available from Land Transport New Zealand.
Training on the job
Earthmoving machine operators gain most of their skills on the job.
Useful experience
Useful experience includes driving heavy vehicles, or work in the building construction, roading, forestry or mining industries.
