Electric Cable Jointer

Electric cable jointers join and test power cables.

Tasks & duties

Electric cable jointers may do some or all of the following:

join and solder live or disconnected power cables
place insulating material around the joints
cover the insulated joints
test and measure the performance of the cables and insulation
make sure the cables are connected properly
provide advice on keeping location diagrams up to date
read and understand diagrams, plans and maps
liaise with other contractors

Skills & knowledge

Electric cable jointers need to have:

knowledge of joining, laying, insulating and testing cables
knowledge of different types of distribution cables
knowledge of basic electrical theory and circuit diagrams
practical skills for using test and measuring equipment
excellent communication and listening skills
good reading and report-writing skills
problem-solving skills
knowledge of safe working practices such as how to work on or near live conductors
knowledge of basic first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

Entry requirements

To become an electric cable jointer you need to complete an apprenticeship and gain a National Certificate in Electricity Supply (Cable Jointer). For further information about apprenticeships contact the Electricity Supply Industry Training Organisation.
Electric cable jointer apprenticeships are also part of the Modern Apprenticeship scheme, which is for people aged 16 to 21. For further information go to the Modern Apprenticeships website.

Secondary education

School Certificate or NCEA Level 1 English and maths is recommended. Science and technical drawing are also useful.

Training on the job

The National Certificate in Electricity Supply (Cable Jointing) Level 3 is for low voltage cable jointing. You need to complete the Level 4 certificate for high voltage cable jointing and Level 5 certificate for specialist cable jointing.

Registration

Electric cable jointers need to be registered with the Electrical Workers Registration Board. To apply for registration you need to complete the National Certificate in Electricity Supply (Cable Jointing) Level 3 and pass an electrical regulations exam.
