Visual Arts, Design and Crafts Careers

Visual arts and design jobs may involve; the design and production of artworks such as prints, carvings, paintings, textiles, pottery or weaving, cartoon art or signwriting, preparing art, images or graphic design for books or magazines and creating images or animation for film or television.
Advertising Art Director
Advertising art directors are responsible for developing advertising ideas and translating these into advertising for print or television to sell a client's product or service. They also pull together a number of people to work on the production of the advertising and give direction on how the final product should look.
Animator
Animators create the motion of characters or moving images for film, television or the Internet.
Architect
Architects plan, design and advise on the construction and alteration of buildings. They also arrange building contracts.
Artist/Craftsperson
Artists/craftspeople develop creative ideas into works of art through a variety of mediums such as paint, clay, wood and stone.
Body Artist
Body artists use sterilised skin piercing equipment and ink or jewellery to decorate the skin.
Bookbinder
Bookbinders put books or other printed materials together by hand or machine. Their work includes binding and sewing books, guillotining, hand tooling, lettering, repairing and re-binding books.
Cartoonist
Cartoonists draw and write cartoons for people, businesses, newspapers, television and magazines. They may specialise in political or comic book cartoons, portrait or strip cartoons, corporate cartoons or performance cartooning.
Graphic Designer
Graphic designers create artwork, such as logos, packaging, advertising or posters, for the promotion or development of goods, services and ideas. They may also design artwork and/or layout for fabrics, magazines, websites and other publications, or help to develop television advertisements.
Illustrator
Illustrators use a variety of media, such as computers and paints, to create images for books, magazines, advertisements and posters.
Photographer
Photographers take photographs of people, places, products or events.
Screen Printer
Screen printers use stencils and screens to copy designs onto a variety of materials and surfaces such as textiles, metals, walls, plastics and glass. Their skills are used in product branding and labelling, electronic manufacturing, signage and interior design.
Signmaker
Signmakers design, paint, write and apply graphics to a wide range of signs. They also build and erect signs.
Visual Art Teacher
Visual art teachers instruct students about the history and techniques of art. They also help students understand, interpret and create art works.
Weaver
Weavers may use mechanical or manual looms to weave cloth, rugs and carpet, or work by hand to produce woven items. Some cloth weavers may also work as textile designers.
Website Developer
Website developers design, produce and maintain websites.
