Pulp and Paper Production Worker

Pulp and paper production workers operate machinery and equipment involved in the pulp and paper production process.

 

Tasks & duties

Pulp and paper production workers may do some or all of the following:

  • operate machinery and equipment in the pulp and paper-making process
  • use computer-controlled systems and manual procedures to monitor the performance of machines and equipment
  • ensure a consistent quality of pulp and paper throughout the production process
  • ensure safety requirements are met
  • make sure the finished product meets the company's or client's specifications
  • supervise a team and do administration duties
  • carry out minor repairs and corrections to machinery and equipment

 

Specialisations

Pulp and paper production workers may specialise in one area of the mill such as chemical processing, pulp production, paper production, boiler operations or environmental control. They usually specialise in operating either pulp or paper machinery.

 

Skills & knowledge

Pulp and paper production workers need to have:

  • knowledge of operating machinery and equipment involved in the pulp and paper-making process
  • knowledge of the production process and how to correct minor faults
  • knowledge of chemical properties and their effect on pulp and paper
  • good communication and problem-solving skills
  • decision-making skills
  • knowledge of safety procedures
  • computer skills

 

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements to become a pulp and paper production worker; however a fork-lift licence is an advantage.

 

Secondary education

There are no specific education requirements, but useful subjects include English, maths and chemistry.

 

Training on the job

Skills are gained on the job. Pulp and paper production workers specialise in different areas and can gain qualifications on the job such as the National Certificate in Pulp and Paper Manufacturing or the National Certificate in Energy and Chemical Plant (Process Operation). 

Pulp and paper production workers may also do courses in health and safety and first aid, and attend conferences.

 

Useful experience

Useful experience for pulp and paper workers includes:

  • experience in a pulp or paper plant
  • work using machinery and computers
  • engineering experience
