Industrial Measurement and Control Technician

Industrial measurement and control technicians install, maintain and repair equipment used to measure and control production processes. They may work in a range of industries including food processing, pulp and paper processing, brewing, petrochemical industries and power generation.

 

Tasks & duties

Industrial measurement and control technicians:

  • install equipment used to control and measure production processes
  • monitor and test equipment for problems
  • calibrate and service control and measurement instruments
  • carry out maintenance on equipment
  • ensure safety standards are met
  • may commission new equipment
  • may travel to visit different clients and workplaces

 

Skills & knowledge

Industrial measurement and control technicians need to have:

  • knowledge of electrical and electronic theory
  • understanding of control processes
  • knowledge of pneumatics and hydraulics
  • problem-solving skills to diagnose and repair faults
  • technical skills, including the ability to work with and care for complex electrical instruments and devices
  • knowledge of safety and construction regulations
  • good communication skills to deal effectively with clients
  • computer skills

 

Entry requirements

To become an industrial and measurement control technician you need to complete an apprenticeship and work towards a National Certificate in Industrial Measurement and Control - Level 4. You can combine your training with an electrician apprenticeship, which leads to the National Certificate in Electrical Engineering (Electrician) - Level 4.

 

Secondary education

School Certificate or NCEA Level 1 maths, english and science is recommended to enter this job. An interest in electronics and technology is also helpful.

 

Tertiary education

A pre-apprenticeship course, such as the National Certificate in Engineering, is recommended as it will help you develop knowledge of electrical theory and safety.

 

Training on the job

Once Industrial Measurement and Control Technicians have completed their apprenticeship, further training is available to achieve the National Certificate in Industrial Measurement and Control - Level 5, and the National Diploma in Engineering - Level 6. Registration

Some employers prefer that industrial measurement and control technicians are registered with the Electrical Workers' Registration Board (EWRB).

 

Useful experience

Work as an electrician or any work involving electrical theory and equipment is useful.
