Surfboard Maker
Tasks & duties

Surfboard makers may do some or all of the following:
-
talk to clients about their needs
-
order materials and equipment
-
design and shape the blank (polyurethane board)
-
apply colour to the board
-
cover the blank with fibreglass cloth and resin
-
draw designs on tissue and transfer them onto the board
-
attach fibreglass fins and/or fin systems
-
sand the board to achieve a smooth finish
-
spray or brush the board with a chemical finish
Skills & knowledge

Surfboard makers need to have:
-
good knowledge of surfing
-
knowledge of different types of waves and how they break
-
knowledge of how temperature affects floatation and materials such as resin
-
drawing skills and knowledge of design and printing techniques
-
skill in evaluating clients' needs
-
the ability to use hand and power tools
-
business and time-management skills if they are self-employed
Entry requirements
To become a surfboard maker you need to have a broad knowledge of surfing and a good level of surfing ability.
Secondary education
There are no specific secondary educational requirements for surfboard makers. However, useful subjects include art, workshop technology or technical drawing.
Training on the job
All skills needed for surfboard making can be learned on the job. Informal apprenticeships with established surfboard makers are sometimes available.
