Singer

Singers perform as soloists or as part of a group to entertain an audience.

 

Tasks & duties

Singers may do some or all of the following:

  • study, memorise and interpret music and words
  • audition for parts
  • practise and rehearse songs or musical acts
  • practise singing exercises to develop their voices
  • perform in public
  • take part in recordings
  • compose songs and/or make vocal arrangements
  • run their own businesses

 

Specialisations

Singers may specialise by singing in a particular style, such as:

  • classical
  • musical theatre
  • popular contemporary
  • jazz

 

Skills & knowledge

Singers need to have:

  • knowledge of vocal and performance techniques, and correct breathing methods
  • skill in interpreting music
  • good performance skills
  • excellent written and oral communication skills
  • organisational skills

 

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements to become a singer, but people may do tertiary music or performing arts school courses, or have private lessons.

Talent and ability are usually more important than qualifications.

 

Training on the job

Singers generally develop their vocal skills and increase their confidence by performing in front of people. Workshops and voice coaches can help with vocal development.

 

Useful Experience

Useful experience for singers includes:

  • performing in front of an audience
  • singing in a choir, musical production or band
  • playing a musical instrument
  • reading or writing music
  • marketing or promotion work

Watching others sing and perform may be helpful for learning new styles of presentation.
