Singers may specialise by singing in a particular style, such as:

Skills & knowledge

Singers need to have:

knowledge of vocal and performance techniques, and correct breathing methods

skill in interpreting music

good performance skills
-
excellent written and oral communication skills

organisational skills
Entry requirements
There are no specific entry requirements to become a singer, but people may do tertiary music or performing arts school courses, or have private lessons.
Talent and ability are usually more important than qualifications.
Training on the job
Singers generally develop their vocal skills and increase their confidence by performing in front of people. Workshops and voice coaches can help with vocal development.

Useful experience for singers includes:

singing in a choir, musical production or band

playing a musical instrument

reading or writing music

marketing or promotion work
Watching others sing and perform may be helpful for learning new styles of presentation.
