Performing Arts Careers
People working in performing arts may; perform and present events, such as plays or concerts, to entertain or inform an audience, plan, direct or produce performances and do technical or hands-on work behind the scenes of a performance.
- Actor
- Actors entertain people by acting out a role using body movement and speech.
- Artistic Director
- Artistic directors select the work to be performed at theatres, choose directors/choreographers and other staff, and supervise productions.
- Comedian
- Comedians entertain people by performing comic routines.
- Composer
- Composers create new music or rewrite existing music for bands, orchestras, singers, plays or films.
- Conductor
- Conductors direct the performance of musicians in an orchestra, vocal/choral ensemble or band.
- Dance Teacher
- Dance teachers instruct people in a variety of dance styles. They design and choreograph dance steps and movements.
- Dancer
- Dancers entertain people by expressing ideas and emotions, usually to music, using body movements.
- Drama Teacher
- Drama teachers teach different acting styles and techniques. They also teach students about the history and theory of drama. They help students write, direct, analyse and write about performances.
- Entertainer
- Entertainers perform a variety of acts, such as dance, drama or acrobatics, to entertain an audience.
- Lighting Technician
- Lighting technicians set up and operate lamps and other lighting equipment to provide light and special lighting effects in theatres, at events, and for film and television productions.
- Make-up Artist
- Make-up artists apply make-up to people to enhance or alter their appearance.
- Model
- Models display and promote clothes or other goods on television, in magazines or on catwalks at fashion shows. They may also appear in other media such as billboards, the Internet, pamphlets and brochures.
- Music Teacher
- Music teachers instruct people in singing or playing musical instruments. They help people understand, interpret and create music.
- Musician
- Musicians play a musical instrument solo or as part of a group to entertain an audience.
- Record Producer
- Record producers organise, direct and oversee the recording of music or sound that will be sold as compact discs and tapes.
- Singer
- Singers perform as soloists or as part of a group to entertain an audience.
- Stuntperson
- Stuntpeople use special stunt equipment to perform dangerous activities for film, television and commercials. They may also act as a body double for other actors.
- Tailor/Dressmaker
- Tailors and dressmakers design, make, alter or repair clothing. They may specialise in certain types of garments.
- Theatre Producer
- Theatre producers manage the production of theatre performances and the running of theatres.
- Wardrobe Person
- Wardrobe people make, arrange and care for costumes and accessories worn in television, theatre or film.
