Nursing, Midwifery and Care Careers
Nursing, midwifery and care jobs involve the assessment, treatment and care of patients in a hospital, clinic or their own home.
- Community Karitane
- Community Karitane offer families with children under the age of five support and information on parenting issues such as breastfeeding, infant nutrition, sleeping and child behaviour.
- District Nurse
- District nurses provide nursing care and treatment to patients in their homes. They assess the needs of the patient and liaise with hospital doctors, general practitioners (GPs) and community groups who provide patient support.
- Health and Safety Officer
- Health and safety officers monitor workplace health and safety risks and hazards, and advise workers and managers on how to minimise or eliminate these risks and hazards. Some may also carry out nursing duties.
- Health Care Assistant
- Health care assistants work under the supervision of registered nurses. They assist nurses and other health professionals to carry out a variety of tasks for sick or elderly patients.
- Hospital Nurse
- Hospital nurses assess, treat, care for and support patients in hospitals, outreach services, clinics and residential care facilities.
- Mental Health Nurse
- Mental health nurses provide treatment, care and support for clients with moderate to severe emotional, mental and psychological problems.
- Midwife
- Midwives provide care and support to women during pregnancy, labour and birth, and for up to six weeks following the birth. They also provide healthcare information for mothers and their babies, and advice on good parenting practices.
- Nurse Practitioner
- Nurse practitioners promote health, assess, diagnose and treat patients, and help them manage their health needs. Some may choose to prescribe medicines.
- Plunket Kaiawhina
- Plunket kaiawhina provide support to whanau and family (particularly the Maori community) and share information about health, well-being and how whanau support structures can be improved.
- Plunket Nurse
- Plunket nurses provide support to parents on child care and parenting, and regularly assess the health and development of children from birth up to the age of five.
- Practice Nurse
- Practice nurses provide health assessments, treatment, care and information for patients.
- Public Health Nurse
- Public health nurses carry out health education, promotion and assessment, and disease prevention activities in schools and the community.
