Quarry Manager

Quarry managers manage the overall operation of removing and processing stones, rocks and minerals from a quarry.

 

Tasks & duties

Quarry managers may do some or all of the following:

  • oversee the process of removing and processing stones, rocks and minerals from a quarry
  • plan future production
  • check the quality of the stone, rock and minerals
  • organise workers and equipment, including equipment maintenance
  • inspect the quarry each morning for visible dangers
  • record that the quarry has been inspected and that it is safe
  • ensure the Health and Safety Act, the Resource Management Act and the Code of Practice – Surface Mines and Quarries are all followed
  • ensure resource consents are granted, and that council requirements and regulations are met and followed
  • monitor the environmental impact of quarrying
  • manage the sale of quarry products
  • oversee the financial administration of the quarry, including budgets, accounts and sales
  • attend meetings with quarry workers and/or quarry supervisors

 

Skills & knowledge

Quarry managers need to have:

  • knowledge of all aspects of the quarrying industry including quarrying methods and equipment
  • knowledge of how to test quarry products for quality and size
  • knowledge of quarry-related legislation, such as the Code of Practice - Surface Mines and Quarries, the Health and Safety Act, and the Resource Management Act
  • knowledge of industry training
  • practical skills to operate and maintain quarry machinery
  • the ability to keep up to date with production methods and technology
  • staff management skills, including good communication skills
  • organisational and planning skills
  • decision-making ability
  • problem-solving skills
  • general administration and computer skills

 

Entry requirements

You must be at least 18 years old to become a quarry manager and hold the appropriate Certificate of Competence under the Health and Safety in Employment (Mining Administration) Regulations 1996. This can be obtained through on-the-job training with the Extractive Industries Training Organisation (EXITO).

 

Secondary education

There are no specific secondary educational qualifications needed to become a quarry manager. However, School Certificate or NCEA equivalent maths and English may be helpful.

 

Training on the job

Most quarry managers tend to enter the quarrying industry as an operator and train on the job, working their way up through a number of roles. Quarry managers can gain operator and supervisory qualifications through EXITO, and have the option of working towards a National Diploma in Extractive Industries (Management).
Quarry managers must keep up to date with developments in the industry through reading and attending courses, seminars and conferences.

 

Useful experience

Work in the quarrying, mining or earthmoving industry may be useful experience for quarry managers. Also knowledge of, or practical experience with, heavy machinery is useful. Experience in working with accounts, finances or general administration may also be useful.
