Moulder
Tasks & duties
Moulders may do some or all of the following:
-
in some small foundries, mix and prepare special sands for moulds
-
put the sand into moulding boxes
-
use patterns of the required object to shape the sand
-
in small foundries, melt the required metal and pour it into the moulds
-
apply a coating to the mould
-
insert cores into the moulds
-
seal the moulding boxes closed with sand glue
-
remove the casting from the mould when it is cold
Skills & knowledge
Moulders need to have:
-
knowledge of different metals and their properties
-
knowledge of casting methods
-
knowledge of various types of sands used in moulding
-
knowledge of different paints for coating sand
-
the ability to operate machinery
-
maths skills
-
skill in interpreting drawings and plans
When moulders are working in a supervisory role they need to be able to communicate clearly with staff in noisy conditions.
Entry requirements
To become a moulder you need to complete an apprenticeship and gain a National Certificate in Metal Casting Technology. For further information about apprenticeships contact Tools4Work.
Secondary education
School Certificate or NCEA equivalent is preferred to become a moulder apprentice. Technical drawing, maths, science and workshop technology are useful subjects.
Training on the job
Skills are gained on the job.
Useful experience
Useful experience for moulders includes labouring work in a foundry or core shop (where cores for moulds are made), which can lead to a moulding apprenticeship.
