Metal, Plastics, Glass and Chemical Engineering and Manufacturing Careers

Metal, plastics, glass and chemical engineering and manufacturing involves processing raw materials into metal, plastics or glass, and producing chemicals that range from petrochemicals to fertilisers and pharmaceuticals.
Assembler (Metal Goods)
Metal goods assemblers join parts together to make metal products such as hinges and door handles.
Biotechnologist
Biotechnologists create or improve products and processes involving biologically based materials. Examples of typical products include pharmaceuticals and more nutritious foods. Typical processes biotechnologists are involved in include fermentation, biomanufacturing, solving environmental problems, food manufacture and even biosecurity.
Composite Engineer
Composite engineers produce and repair fibreglass products for industrial, architectural, marine and automotive use.
Engineering Machinist and Toolmaker
Engineering machinists and toolmakers make tools and other precision equipment used for mass production in goods such as vehicles, navigational equipment and household appliances.
Food Engineer
Food engineers design, develop and test processes and processing equipment for food processing factories.
Glass Processor
Glass processors process sheets of flat glass and flat glass products, such as windows, for installation in buildings and related structures.
Industrial Chemist
Industrial chemists study the make-up and behaviour of chemicals, the way they react with each other and how they can be used in industrial processes such as producing plastics, pharmaceuticals or silicon chips.
Industrial Designer
Industrial designers design and develop products for use in homes, businesses and industry.
Industrial Measurement and Control Technician
Industrial measurement and control technicians install, maintain and repair equipment used to measure and control production processes. They may work in a range of industries including food processing, pulp and paper processing, brewing, petrochemical industries and power generation.
Maintenance and Diagnostics Engineer
Maintenance and diagnostics engineers make, fit and repair parts for machines and related equipment used on boats, farms, sawmills and mining sites, as well as in factories and oil refineries.
Metallurgist
Metallurgists are engineers who specialise in metals. They develop processes that produce or process metals, and give advice on their use, extraction, improvement, production, performance and the way they should be combined with other materials such as polymers or ceramics.
Moulder
Moulders use sand to make moulds, which they use to produce metal castings.
Pharmaceutical Factory Worker
Pharmaceutical factory workers perform a variety of tasks involved in producing toiletries or pharmaceutical products such as ointments, creams, aerosols, tablets, capsules, bandages and vaccines.
Plastics Die Setter
Plastics die setters prepare, maintain and repair dies (moulds) used in the production of plastic products.
Plastics Engineer
Plastics engineers set up and monitor the machines used to produce plastic products.
Plastics Machine Operator
Plastics machine operators operate machinery that makes plastic products, and package the finished products.
Plastics Process Technician
Plastics process technicians develop and maintain the plastics production process, and analyse and fix any process problems.
Process Engineer (Chemical)
Process or chemical engineers design, develop and operate processes and equipment that are used to change raw materials into useful products. Chemical engineering covers a wide variety of jobs such as environmental engineering, biochemical engineering and waste engineering, and chemical engineers are often known as process engineers to indicate the wide range of jobs that they do.
Production Manager
Production managers organise and control the production of goods in a factory. They ensure that products are made to customers' specifications and delivered on time.
Production Planner
Production planners plan timetables and organise materials to ensure the smooth running of a factory.
Technical Manager
Technical managers are responsible for the quality and performance of equipment, projects, products and technology in their workplace.
