Fast food managers:

hire, train, pay and supervise staff

ensure that the food served is up to standard

Skills & knowledge

Fast food managers need to have knowledge of:

food preparation, cooking and the presentation of food

food prices, ordering and stock management
-
hygiene, and health and safety regulations
-
business management, including budgeting, accounting, sales and marketing
-
planning and organisational skills
-
good communication and people skills for dealing with customers and staff
Fast food managers who work for large companies or as part of a franchise (fast food chain) need to know the company's rules and codes of practice.
Entry requirements
There are no specific requirements to become a fast food manager, although accounting and maths may be useful subjects to study at school. A training course in food safety may also be helpful.
Training on the job
Fast food managers gain their skills on the job. Credits towards a National Certificate in Hospitality can be gained while working and fast food managers may also attend training courses on topics such as accounting and food safety.
Useful experience
Experience working in kitchens or cafes is useful for fast food managers. Any other work in the hospitality and retail industries may also provide good experience.
