Casino Worker

Casino workers lead and control games played at casinos, calculate winnings and losses, and pay out players.

 

Tasks & duties

Casino workers may do some or all of the following:

  • understand the rules for a variety of table games 
  • open the cash float and game table
  • check the cards and equipment that will be used in the game
  • exchange money for chips
  • start and control the game
  • calculate the amount of chips players have won and lost
  • pay out chips
  • close the float and table, and make sure it all balances

 

Casino workers are usually trained in only a few games. Games they may operate include blackjack, roulette, baccarat, pai gow, poker, Caribbean stud poker, money wheel and tai sai.

 

Skills & knowledge

Casino workers need to have:

  • knowledge of the rules of the game they are dealing and the procedures they have to follow
  • understanding of what different bets mean and what they are worth
  • knowledge of the security risks that may occur in the casino.
  • excellent communication and listening skills as they may have to deal with people who do not speak English as their first language
  • customer service skills as they often have to deal with difficult customers
  • good maths skills

 

Entry requirements

To become a casino worker you must be over 20 years old and have passed a police check and a Department of Internal Affairs check. After that, you must be issued with a gaming licence before you can start working as a casino worker.

 

Secondary education

There are no specific educational requirements, but a good standard of English and maths is preferred.

 

Training on the job

Casino workers are trained by the casino before they start working and continue to gain skills once they are working.

 

Useful experience

Useful experience for people wanting to become a casino worker includes work in jobs that involve money-handling or customer service.
