Café Manager
Tasks & duties

Café managers may do some or all of the following:

hire and train staff
-
plan budgets
-
keep records of supplies
-
organise the buying of goods
-
plan what food to serve
-
help serve food and drinks
-
arrange for packaging and delivery of goods
-
deal with complaints
-
ensure health and safety regulations are followed
-
discipline staff when necessary
-
liaise with the café owner about business issues
Skills & knowledge

Café managers need to have:
-
business management skills, including budgeting, planning, stocktaking and marketing skills
-
excellent communication and customer service skills
-
staff management skills
-
food and drink preparation skills
-
knowledge of health, safety and food hygiene regulations
-
knowledge of their competitors' prices and services
-
knowledge of legal requirements if they sell alcoholic drinks
-
money-handling skills
Entry requirements
There are no specific entry requirements to become a café manager, but experience in the food and beverage industry is important.
To become a café manager on a licensed premises you must be at least 18 years old and hold a General Managers Certificate. To apply for this you must hold a Licence Controller Qualification (LCQ), which is administered by the Hospitality Standards Institute.
Secondary education
There are no specific secondary education requirements, but Sixth Form Certificate or NCEA equivalent English, maths and accounting is useful. Some schools also offer hospitality training.
Training on the job
A National Certificate in Hospitality is useful to become a café manager. Credits towards this may be gained while working.
Useful experience
Any experience working with food, including bakery work, work as a waiter, kitchen assistant or chef is useful. Staff management experience, work in a training role, bookkeeping and cash handling experience is also useful.
