People working in health services jobs may; assess, diagnose and treat patients and clients, care for patients and clients in their home, a hospital, clinic or emergency, rehabilitate people who have specific injuries or disorders (for example, difficulty with speech or movement), care for and maintain hospital equipment, help people to prevent injuries and maintain their health and work in a laboratory or do research.
- Acupuncturist
- Acupuncturists treat patients using the philosophies of traditional Chinese medicine and aim to restore their good health by bringing about balance in the body. Acupuncturists use a number of therapies including needle acupuncture, the heating of acupuncture points (moxibustion), tuina (a form of massage), exercise, diet recommendations and herbal treatments.
- Ambulance Officer
- Ambulance officers attend to ill and injured people at accident sites or in medical emergencies, and transport them to hospitals and other suitable medical facilities. They also provide non-urgent transport for patients between hospitals and from homes to hospitals.
- Anaesthetic Technician
- Anaesthetic technicians assist anaesthetists and prepare operating theatres and clinics for anaesthetic procedures.
- Audiologist
- Audiologists study, identify, measure and treat hearing disorders and loss. They also provide aids and/or other listening devices to assist patients who have hearing loss.
- Audiometrist
- Audiometrists conduct hearing assessments, fit hearing aids and assist people with impaired hearing.
- Cardiac Physiologist
- Cardiac physiologists use a variety of technical equipment to monitor, record and measure the way patients' hearts are working to help doctors diagnose and treat patients with heart disease.
- Chiropractor
- Chiropractors care for patients with nerve, muscle and joint system disorders. They may assess or adjust the patient's body with the appropriate care to restore physical and emotional health and well-being.
- Dietitian
- Dietitians advise patients, communities and groups about their dietary requirements for maintaining good health, managing food services and food and nutrition issues.
- Dispensing Optician
- Dispensing opticians interpret prescriptions from optometrists and ophthalmologists (eye specialists) for optical appliances (glasses or contact lenses), select frame and lens systems, and fit and assemble those appliances.
- First Aid Tutor
- First aid tutors facilitate first aid learning and knowledge.
- Massage Therapist
- Massage therapists manipulate the soft tissue of people's bodies to treat a variety of ailments, and to help people relax.
- Medical Laboratory Scientist
- Medical laboratory scientists work in a team with pathologists and carry out laboratory tests on blood, tissues and other samples taken from patients.
- Medical Laboratory Technician
- Medical laboratory technicians help scientists and pathologists with tests and other duties involved in the operation of a diagnostic medical laboratory.
- Medical Radiation Technologist
- Medical radiation technologists use x-ray and other imaging equipment to take images of people's injuries and possible diseases.
- Natural Health Therapist
- Natural health therapists help restore balance to the body and mind through natural healing methods such as special diets, herbal or homeopathic remedies, acupressure, massage or essential oils.
- Neurophysiology Technologist
- Neurophysiology technologists record electrical activity produced by the brain, nerves and muscles to help diagnose illnesses.
- Nuclear Medicine Technologist
- Nuclear medicine technologists use radioactive materials (tracers) and a gamma camera to diagnose and occasionally treat diseases. Nuclear medicine is a specialised area of medical radiation technology.
- Occupational Therapist
- Occupational therapists assess and treat people who, because of illness, injury or circumstance, are limited in their ability to undertake the activities of everyday life. They help people to regain lost functions, develop their abilities and social skills, and maintain and promote independence in their everyday tasks to enhance their health and well-being.
- Optometrist
- Optometrists examine clients' eyes and visual systems to diagnose vision problems and eye diseases. They provide correction and other treatment when required.
- Orthotist/Prosthetist
- Orthotists make braces or devices to aid or correct skeletal injuries or problems. Prosthetists make artificial limbs for those who have suffered amputations through illness or injury.
- Osteopath
- Osteopaths treat disorders of the body by gently moving muscles, bones and joints. They help to relieve pain and improve the function of the body.
- Pharmacist
- Pharmacists prepare, mix and dispense prescribed medicines. They also give patients advice about their medication and medical conditions, and help ensure patients know how to take their medication properly.
- Pharmacy Technician
- Pharmacy technicians help pharmacists to prepare and give out medicines.
- Phlebotomist
- Phlebotomists collect blood samples and/or body fluids from patients for laboratory testing or for blood banks.
- Physiotherapist
- Physiotherapists work with people of all ages to maintain and promote health, and restore function and independence when people have a disability or problem caused by physical, neurological (related to the brain and nervous system) or other disorders.
- Podiatrist
- Podiatrists diagnose, treat and prevent foot and lower limb problems. Their work includes routine foot care; the care of lower limbs for people with diseases such as diabetes; the diagnosis and treatment of sports-related injuries; nail and skin surgery; and biomechanical assessment.
- Radiation Therapist
- Radiation therapists are part of a skilled team that cares for and uses radiation equipment to treat primarily cancer patients.
- Speech-Language Therapist
- Speech-language therapists assess and treat children and/or adults who have a communication or swallowing disability. This may include difficulties with speech, language, cognition (thought processes), voice or fluency.
- Sterilising Technician
- Sterilising technicians process medical equipment and instruments.
