Rest Home Manager

Rest home managers are responsible for running homes for elderly people and overseeing the care of rest home residents.

 

Tasks & duties

Rest home managers may do some or all of the following:

  • manage the rest home's facilities
  • spend time with elderly residents and their families
  • ensure residents receive the correct medication and medical treatment
  • manage, or oversee the management of residents' nutrition and consult with dietitians when necessary
  • transport staff and residents to health providers and hospitals
  • liaise with health professionals to help develop and manage the care plans of residents
  • facilitate the signing of an admission agreement by each resident
  • ensure the development of a timetable of events in the rest home that meets the recreation needs of the residents
  • identify risks and take steps to minimise the possibility of these risks occurring
  • meet the health and safety requirements set by government
  • write reports for government health authorities
  • oversee or manage the finances and budget of the rest home
  • keep informed about legislative requirements
  • promote the rest home through advertising and sponsorship
  • manage large groups of staff and ensure their ongoing training needs are met

 

Skills & knowledge

Rest home managers need to have:

  • good business skills, including knowledge of budgeting, finance and business promotion
  • report writing skills
  • knowledge of health regulations, including the laws governing health, safety and employment
  • the ability to manage and train staff
  • skill in caring for elderly people
  • communication skills
  • organisational skills
  • problem-solving skills

 

Entry requirements

To become a rest home manager you need approval from the Director-General of Health. Management qualifications or experience is also required to enter this occupation.

Training on the job

Rest home managers gain many skills on the job. They also continue their professional development by attending relevant training courses.

 

Useful experience

Useful experience for rest home managers includes:

  • work as a nurse, geriatric nurse or ward manager
  • any other work in the health sector
  • budgeting and accounting experience
  • any rest home work

Business management and people management experience is also helpful.
