Rubbish/Recycling Collector
Tasks & duties

Rubbish/recycling collectors may do some or all of the following:
-
drive or ride in or on a rubbish/recycling truck
-
take instructions from customers
-
pick up bags or bins of rubbish/recycling and throw them into the truck
-
separate rubbish for recycling and remove hazardous waste
-
operate equipment that crushes the rubbish/items for recycling
-
unload and clean the truck
-
organise schedules for rubbish/recycling collection
Skills & knowledge
Rubbish/recycling collectors need to have:
-
knowledge of collection routes
-
knowledge of what they should or should not collect
-
knowledge of safety procedures and basic hygiene
-
an awareness of correct lifting and carrying techniques
-
the ability to drive heavy trucks
-
the ability to operate rubbish compactors and other types of rubbish/recycling collection vehicles
-
good communication skills
Self-employed rubbish/recycling collectors also need to have business management and basic maths skills, and knowledge of business contracts.
Entry requirements
To become a rubbish/recycling collector you need to have a current driver's licence. Those wanting to work as a contractor must have a Heavy Trade (HT) licence. Training on the job
Skills are gained on the job. Rubbish/recycling collectors may also attend courses in first aid, health and safety, waste management, hazardous waste and recycling.
Useful experience
Useful experience for rubbish/recycling collectors includes any work involving physical labour or driving heavy vehicles.
