Environmental Care and Waste Management Careers
Work in environmental care and waste management includes; rubbish collection, recycling and cleaning streets, treating waste water, looking after areas such as gardens, parks or sports fields, and buildings such as schools, monitoring restaurants and workplaces to protect public health, controlling animal and plant pests and protecting the diversity of animals and plants in our national parks.
- Biosecurity Officer
- Biosecurity officers check areas of land for harmful animals or plants and arrange for their destruction or control.
- Botanist
- Botanists research and examine plants. They study the genetics and molecular biology of plants, and what effect the environment has on them.
- Caretaker
- Caretakers keep places, such as schools, apartment blocks and public buildings, clean, safe and in good order. They may also look after the surrounding grounds.
- Ecologist
- Ecologists study the relationships among and between organisms and their environments, and the effects external influences such as population size and pollutants may have on these relationships.
- Environmental Health Officer
- Environmental health officers assess registered premises (such as food outlets, hairdressing salons), ensure their compliance with regulations, and grant licences to them. They also investigate environmental problems that could endanger public health, including monitoring noise control of industrial sites, overcrowding in housing, contaminated water, air quality and rubbish accumulation.
- Hunter/Trapper
- Hunters and trappers find and catch or shoot animals for food, pelts (skins), fur, research or to remove pests.
- Pest Control Technician
- Pest control technicians manage pests, such as insects, rodents, rabbits, feral goats, possums and pest birds, in homes and businesses, parks and reserves, and on farmland. They also advise people on how to keep properties and buildings free from these pests.
- Ranger
- Rangers supervise, maintain, enhance and protect conservation areas such as forests, coasts, wetlands, national parks, maritime parks, regional parks, reserves, and sites of historical or cultural importance.
- Rubbish/Recycling Collector
- Rubbish/recycling collectors collect household, industrial or commercial rubbish for disposal or recycling.
- Spraying Contractor
- Spraying contractors enter into contracts with clients to spray plants or land with chemicals that help or prevent growth of weeds, crops and other plants.
- Street/Park Cleaner
- Street/park cleaners sweep and clean streets, gutters, footpaths, and other public areas such as parks and car parks. They may also clear the sides of roads in rural areas, and are responsible for keeping ditches and culverts clear of debris.
- Water/Waste Water Treatment Operator
- Water/waste water treatment operators operate water treatment equipment and control the process that purifies rain, ground and river water for human and industrial use. They also control the treatment and disposal of sewage and industrial waste water.
