Fax and Photocopier Technician

Fax and photocopier technicians install, maintain and repair electronic office equipment such as faxes, photocopiers and printers. They may service a range of equipment or specialise in one product.

 

Tasks & duties

Fax and photocopier technicians:

  • receive details about machines that need to be serviced
  • travel to clients' premises to service machines
  • talk with clients to determine why a machine is not working
  • diagnose any operator problems and provide instructions on how to operate machines properly
  • diagnose any mechanical problems and repairs machines
  • diagnose and fix any software related problems
  • record tasks performed
  • may prepare and check new machines for delivery to clients

 

Specialisations

Fax and photocopier technicians may specialise in servicing certain brands or models of faxes, printers or photocopiers depending on the company they work for.

 

Skills & knowledge

Fax and photocopier technicians need to have:

  • knowledge of the faxes and/or photocopiers they are servicing
  • knowledge of how to install, test and repair faxes and photocopiers
  • computer skills to install, test and repair faxes and photocopiers
  • good problem-solving skills to diagnose and repair faults
  • good communication skills to deal effectively with clients

 

Entry requirements

To become a fax and photocopier technician you must be registered as an Electrical Service Technician (EST) with the Electrical Workers' Registration Board. Registration must be renewed annually and enables you to work unsupervised on electronic machines of 230 volts.

 

Secondary education

School Certificate or NCEA Level 1 English, maths, science and physics is useful to enter this job.
Some schools offer electronics and give students the opportunity to complete units towards the National Certificate in Electronics Technology (Office Automation).

 

Tertiary education

A qualification such as the National Certificate in Electronics Engineering Level 3, the National Diploma in Engineering (previously the New Zealand Certificate in Engineering) or a relevant NCEA qualification or trade certificate may be useful.

 

Training on the job

Skills are gained on the job. Fax and photocopier technicians receive training from experienced technicians before they are allowed to work unsupervised. Fax and photocopier technicians also receive training when new products are launched and may take computer courses to keep up to date with technological developments.

 

Useful experience

Previous experience working with computers, electronics, and electrical or mechanical equipment is useful.
