Electrical Appliance Serviceperson

Electrical appliance service people install, repair and maintain household and commercial electrical appliances such as refrigerators, microwaves and washing machines.

 

Tasks & duties

Electrical appliance service people may do some or all of the following:

  • talk to clients about problems and faults with their appliances
  • carry out electrical tests to check for faults in appliances
  • repair or replace any failed parts
  • reassemble and test appliances
  • clean appliances
  • take appliances back to their place of work for further investigation and testing
  • keep records of the problems they find with appliances and the servicing they carry out
  • install and maintain new appliances
  • collect payment from clients
  • complete stocktakes of supplies in their vehicles
  • supply customers with temporary appliances to use while theirs are being repaired
  • run their own business

 

Skills & knowledge

Electrical appliance servicepeople need to have:

  • knowledge of electrical appliances and how they work
  • skill in diagnosing problems and repairing equipment that has failed
  • knowledge of electrical circuits and the ability to read circuit diagrams
  • knowledge of electrical theory
  • technical and practical skills to install, test and repair electrical appliances
  • knowledge of safe working practices
  • problem-solving skills
  • communication and listening skills
  • computer skills
  • good record-keeping skills

 

Entry requirements

To become an electrical appliance serviceperson you need to complete an apprenticeship and gain a National Certificate in Electrical Appliance Servicing. For further information contact the ETITO. Electrical appliance serviceperson apprenticeships are part of the Modern Apprenticeship scheme, which are for people aged 16 to 21. Secondary education

There are no secondary education requirements, but School Certificate or NCEA Level 1 English, maths and science is preferred.

 

Training on the job

On completion of your apprenticeship and the National Certificate in Electrical Appliance Servicing, you can work towards a New Zealand Certificate in Engineering or a National Diploma in Electrotechnology. Electrical appliance service people may attend workshops, seminars or training courses to keep up date with the latest appliances. Some larger companies may provide training for their employees over the Internet, in a self-paced learning style, similar to distance learning.

 

Registration

To work unsupervised, electrical appliance service people must gain Electrical Service Technician (EST) registration with the Electrical Workers Registration Board and a practising licence. This practising licence must be renewed annually.

If you are completing an apprenticeship, the EST is incorporated into the National Certificate in Electrical Appliance Servicing.

 

Useful experience

Useful experience includes work in electrical businesses, such as appliance sales or delivery work. Any other work involving electrical or electronic components, mechanical work, or work as an electrician or plumber and gasfitter is also useful.
