Education Careers
New Zealand's government-funded (state) and private education system is divided into three main areas; early childhood education, compulsory schooling, which is divided into primary and secondary schooling and tertiary education.
- Dance Teacher
- Dance teachers instruct people in a variety of dance styles. They design and choreograph dance steps and movements.
- Drama Teacher
- Drama teachers teach different acting styles and techniques. They also teach students about the history and theory of drama. They help students write, direct, analyse and write about performances.
- Early Childhood Teacher
- Early childhood teachers educate and care for young children in early childhood education services such as kindergartens or education and care centres. They also plan and provide experiences that cater for all aspects of the children's learning and development.
- Education Officer
- Education officers research, plan and teach education programmes to early childhood, primary or secondary school groups, tertiary groups and members of the public.
- Educational Adviser
- Educational advisers provide advice and support to educational establishments and teachers about educational policies and teaching methods to enhance student learning.
- Educational Psychologist
- Educational psychologists work with students, parents, educators and mental health services to develop supportive environments for students with difficulties that impact on their learning and well-being.
- Kaiwhakaako Māori
- Kaiwhakaako Māori teach Māori language and culture to primary, intermediate and secondary school students.
- Kohanga Reo Kaiako
- Kohanga reo kaiako educate and care for pre-school aged children and communicate with them in Maori at a kohanga reo (Maori language nest).
- Music Teacher
- Music teachers instruct people in singing or playing musical instruments. They help people understand, interpret and create music.
- Nanny
- Nannies are responsible for the care, well-being and education of children in the home.
- Physical Education Teacher
- Physical education teachers instruct students in sporting activities, health and well-being, and help them to develop their physical skills.
- Primary School Teacher
- Primary school teachers teach children between the ages of five and 13 at primary or intermediate schools.
- Review Officer
- Review officers assess how schools, early childhood education services, kōhanga reo and kura kaupapa Māori (Māori medium schools) are performing. They also report on the education of students exempt from attending school.
- School Principal
- School principals provide leadership for their staff and students. They also plan and manage the use of resources in schools and control the day-to-day administration.
- Secondary School Teacher
- Secondary school teachers teach one or more curriculum subject areas to students of approximately 13 to 18 years of age at a secondary school.
- Special Education Teacher
- Special education teachers teach students with hearing, vision, emotional or behavioural difficulties, physical and/or intellectual disabilities or special needs in learning or communication. They also help schools and other teachers provide suitable learning programmes for these students. They may work as classroom teachers or specialist resource teachers in early childhood centres, primary or secondary schools, or in special schools.
- Teacher Aide
- Teacher aides support teachers in a classroom by helping individual students with the lesson or a specific programme.
- Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
- Teachers of English to speakers of other languages (ESOL teachers) teach people from non-English speaking backgrounds how to speak, read and write in English.
- Technology Teacher
- Technology teachers teach school students practical subjects such as food and nutrition, textiles and design, design and technology, graphics and design, electronics or information technology.
- Tertiary Lecturer
- Tertiary lecturers teach at universities, colleges of education, polytechnics, wānanga and other post-secondary education providers. They may carry out research to be published.
- Trainer
- Trainers work with individual adults, groups and/or organisations to provide practical training for a variety of reasons, often to improve workplace performance. The topics taught include management, computers, team building, time management, presentation, basic work skills and interpersonal skills such as communication and negotiation.
- Visual Art Teacher
- Visual art teachers instruct students about the history and techniques of art. They also help students understand, interpret and create art works.
