Writing Topic Sentences
A topic sentence (also known as a focus sentence) encapsulates or organises an entire paragraph, and you should be careful to include one in most of your major paragraphs. Although topic sentences may appear anywhere in a paragraph, in academic essays they often appear at the beginning.

Image Yellowbelly Flounder
Average size 25-40 cm. Graded according to weight from 175 to 600+ gms. Colour variable according to environment but often dark green, blind side yellowish and often with dark spots. Distinguished from sand flounder by colour, oval shape and smaller eyes. Yellowbelly occurs throughout New Zealand coastal waters down to about 50 m. Caught mainly by set net in harbours and bays. Available all year. A small resource.

Average length 20-30 cm, average weight less than 0.5 kg. Smaller and more slender than the grey mullet, with a pointed head and snout: scales thin and easily dislodged. Blue-green above, silver below:; eye bright yellow. Very common in shallow coastal waters around New Zealand, particularly in bays, harbours and estuaries. Schooling fish, caught by beach seine or set nets. Resource size unknown, probably small.

Average size 60-100 cm, reaching 200 cm, and an average weight of 30 kg. Cosmopolitan in tropical and subtropical seas. Migratory, pelagic. Metallic dark blue above, changing through yellow to silvery white on belly. Large fish have very long second dorsal and anal fins. Main fishing grounds north east of New Zealand between East Cape and North Cape where game vessels with trolling gear take small numbers and foreign longliners engage in a limited fishery for this species from January to March. A small resource.

Average length 50-80 cm, average weight 3-5 kg. Blur green above, silver-white below, yellow on sides. Fins yellowish, tail fin brightest. Common in coastal waters and around North Island. Pelagic. Caught mainly by trawling, some by set net, line and trolling. Landed all year round but more available during the summer. Size of resource unknown but probably small.
