Social Sciences Careers
Social scientists conduct research, evaluate and analyse aspects of the world such as societies, cultures, people, human behaviour and the physical environment. Areas of social science include; archaeology and anthropology, history, economics and statistics, geography and demography and sociology and criminology.
- Anthropologist
- Anthropologists study and compare present and past societies and cultures, and write and present reports on their findings. They usually specialise in one area of anthropology such as social/cultural anthropology or biological anthropology.
- Archaeologist
- Archaeologists study past societies, people and cultures by investigating and examining materials and artefacts, and by surveying historical sites. Archaeologists may also be involved in the protection and conservation of archaeological sites.
- Criminologist
- Criminologists study criminal behaviour and its causes, and the effects of crime on victims, the community, policing and the criminal justice system. They may work in a policy and/or research role within a justice-related organisation, and may also teach.
- Demographer
- Demographers analyse the size, characteristics and movement of groups of people. They may specialise in an area that relates to human populations such as health, housing, education, family characteristics, agriculture or economics.
- Economist
- Economists are interested in the factors that influence the well-being of people and aim to find solutions to improve people's standard of living. This includes studying how financial, labour and trade markets are organised and how they interact.
- Geographer
- Geographers study patterns resulting from the relationship between human activities and the Earth's surface.
- Historian
- Historians research, write and present information about events and people of the past and present. They may also teach history.
- Policy Analyst
- Policy analysts gather and analyse information to assist in the planning, development, interpretation and review of government or industrial policies.
- Political Scientist
- Political scientists research, study, write, analyse and report on a wide range of political and governmental subjects and areas.
- Psychiatrist
- Psychiatrists assess and provide treatment for people with mental, emotional and behavioural disorders. They also study how the brain and nervous systems function and how these interact with people's environments and affect the way people think, feel and behave.
- Sociologist
- Sociologists study and research human society and social behaviour, and write reports on research findings.
- Statistician
- Statisticians collect, analyse, interpret, then present numerical information to assist in decision-making. They may specialise in one particular area such as economics, health or agriculture.
