Retail Salesperson

Retail salespeople sell goods to customers in a shop or warehouse.

 

Tasks & duties

Retail salespeople may do some or all of the following:

  • help customers choose products
  • advise on the use and care of products
  • pack or wrap purchases
  • collect payment or arrange credit
  • keep sales areas clean and tidy
  • price stock
  • display new stock
  • carry out stocktakes
  • order new stock andcheck stock is in good condition when it arrives
  • arrange the delivery of purchases
  • prepare invoices and sales dockets

 

Skills & knowledge

Retail salespeople need to have:

  • knowledge of the product being sold
  • knowledge of the Consumer Guarantees Act
  • good communication and listening skills
  • good customer service and sales skills
  • basic maths skills
  • organisational skills and the ability to memorise stock

 

Entry requirements

Although there are no specific entry requirements for becoming a retail salesperson, School Certificate or NCEA equivalent English and maths is preferred.

 

Training on the job

Skills are gained on the job. Retail salespeople may also attend company training courses or retailing courses. Modern Apprenticeships are also available for retail salespeople.

 

Useful experience

Experience working with money or making calculations is useful for retail salespeople. Work involving contact with people is also helpful.
