Car Salesperson

Car salespeople sell new or used cars, trucks and other vehicles.

 

Tasks & duties

Car salespeople may do some or all of the following:

  • prepare vehicles for sale
  • help customers decide which vehicles best suit their needs
  • accompany customers who are test driving vehicles
  • collect payment or arrange finance on vehicles
  • decide on the trade in value of the customer's used vehicle
  • arrange vehicle insurance for customers
  • organise advertising and promotions
  • keep a database of customers and potential customers
  • deal with painters, panelbeaters and parts suppliers

 

Skills & knowledge

Car salespeople need to have:

  • good product knowledge about the vehicles they sell
  • up to date knowledge of new cars on the market and market trends
  • some knowledge of how vehicle engines work
  • knowledge of finance and payment options, and accounting skills
  • sales and negotiating skills
  • good communication skills
  • time management and organisational ability
  • driving skills
  • computer skills

 

Entry requirements

A driver's licence is usually required to work as a car salesperson. Car salespeople who own their own car yard need to be registered with the Motor Vehicle Traders Register (MVTR).

 

Secondary education

There are no specific secondary education requirements, but School Certificate or NCEA equivalent English and Maths may be useful.

 

Training on the job

Many skills are gained on the job, and car salespeople may attend various sales and training courses.

Car salespeople can complete the National Certificate in Vehicle Sales through on and off the job training. This can be done as a Vehicle Salesperson Apprenticeship. For further information contact the New Zealand Motor Industry Training Organisation (MITO).

 

Useful experience

Useful experience includes sales work, dealing with people, vehicle servicing and vehicle grooming.
