Mechanical Engineering, Machinery and Equipment Manufacturing Careers

Mechanical engineering, machinery and equipment manufacturing involves the design, production and maintenance of machinery, equipment, tools, mechanical systems and metal products.
Aeronautical Engineer
Aeronautical engineers provide technical support and approved technical data for use in the repair, maintenance and modification of aircraft.
Aircraft Engineer
Aircraft engineers maintain and repair the engine, body, cabin, systems, wings, and other parts of aircraft.
Avionics Engineering Tradesperson
Avionics engineering tradespeople maintain and repair an aircraft's electrical, instrument and radio systems.
Boiler Attendant
Boiler attendants look after and maintain boilers that produce steam for heat or power.
Composite Engineer
Composite engineers produce and repair fibreglass products for industrial, architectural, marine and automotive use.
Engineering Machinist and Toolmaker
Engineering machinists and toolmakers make tools and other precision equipment used for mass production in goods such as vehicles, navigational equipment and household appliances.
Fabrication Engineer (Heavy)
Heavy fabrication engineers use thick metal plates, pipes and shaped pieces (sections) of metal to make and repair things such as the framework of buildings, ship hulls, bridges, boilers, storage tanks and cranes.
Fabrication Engineer (Welding)
Welding fabrication engineers make, join and repair metal parts for machinery and equipment such as motor bodies, trailer units, containers, truck frames and bridges.
Fire Protection Engineer
Fire protection engineers consult and advise on how to apply fire safety features to buildings so that they meet the New Zealand Building Code. They also design building facilities for life safety and property protection in the event of a fire.
Gunsmith
Gunsmiths make, modify, repair and service firearms. They may also hire and sell firearms, firearm parts, ammunition and accessories.
Heating, Ventilation and Air-conditioning Engineer
Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning engineers design and supervise the building, installation, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems and equipment.
Industrial Designer
Industrial designers design and develop products for use in homes, businesses and industry.
Industrial Spray Painter
Industrial spray painters, paint, powder-coat or resurface industrial machinery and a variety of goods, equipment, structures and materials used in homes, offices and industries.
Lift Technician
Lift technicians install, maintain and repair lift and escalator systems.
Locksmith
Locksmiths maintain, repair, install and replace locks, keys, safes and locking devices in businesses, private homes, building sites and vehicles.
Maintenance and Diagnostics Engineer
Maintenance and diagnostics engineers make, fit and repair parts for machines and related equipment used on boats, farms, sawmills and mining sites, as well as in factories and oil refineries.
Marine Engineer
Marine engineers build, maintain, service and repair engines, as well as mechanical and electronic equipment on board a variety of vessels.
Mechanical Engineer
Mechanical engineers design and give advice on the building and repair of machines and tools. They also investigate problems and faults with machinery, and study ways to improve manufacturing and energy production.
Mechanical Engineering Technician
Mechanical engineering technicians assist with the design, building and maintenance of machines, such as air-conditioning systems, heating and ventilation units and power plants. They also develop manufacturing quality control systems by studying and improving the mechanical processes and machinery on production lines.
Metallurgist
Metallurgists are engineers who specialise in metals. They develop processes that produce or process metals, and give advice on their use, extraction, improvement, production, performance and the way they should be combined with other materials such as polymers or ceramics.
Moulder
Moulders use sand to make moulds, which they use to produce metal castings.
Pattern Maker
Pattern makers produce original patterns that are used to make moulds. They make patterns from a variety of materials including wood, fibreglass, plaster, resin composites and metals.
Production Manager
Production managers organise and control the production of goods in a factory. They ensure that products are made to customers' specifications and delivered on time.
Production Planner
Production planners plan timetables and organise materials to ensure the smooth running of a factory.
Refrigeration Service Engineer
Refrigeration service engineers install, service and maintain refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.
Refrigeration/Air-conditioning Design Engineer
Refrigeration design engineers design refrigeration systems for making frozen foods such as ice cream, or chilling products such as fruit, flowers, meat and dairy foods. Air-conditioning design engineers design air-conditioning systems for commercial and industrial buildings, private homes and cars.
Saw Doctor
Saw doctors repair and sharpen hand, chain, band and circular saws.
Sheet Metal Engineer
Sheet metal engineers make, install and repair sheet metal products such as vents, machine guards, roof flashings and aircraft parts.
Technical Manager
Technical managers are responsible for the quality and performance of equipment, projects, products and technology in their workplace.
