Warehouse Worker
Tasks & duties

Warehouse workers may do some or all of the following:
-
load and unload trucks and containers
-
keep records of goods coming in and out
-
check and label goods
-
wrap goods for storage
-
put goods away in the correct areas
-
pack and assemble goods for delivery
-
restock warehouse shelves when necessary
-
clean and tidy the warehouse
-
operate trolleys and fork-lifts
Skills & knowledge

Warehouse workers need to have:
-
good planning, communication and listening skills
-
a basic understanding of maths
-
knowledge of warehouse procedures and general stock control
-
knowledge of the goods being stored
-
an awareness of safety regulations and procedures to ensure any potential hazards involved with stacking or unloading products are minimised
-
the ability to operate a range of machinery including fork-lifts
Entry requirements
There are no specific entry requirements to become a warehouse worker, although a National Certificate in Distribution is available through Tranzqual ITO. The NZ Defence Force also recruits and trains people with similar skills and duties to warehouse workers.
Those required to operate a fork-lift will need to have the appropriate driver's licence and/or certification. For further information on fork-lift licensing see fork-lift operator job information or contact Land Transport NZ.
Secondary education
There are no specific secondary education requirements, but a basic knowledge of English and maths is preferred.
Training on the job
Many skills are learned on the job while being trained or completing a National Certificate in Distribution.
Useful experience
Experience in store handling, warehousing, truck driving or fork-lift driving is useful. Labouring and heavy lifting experience may also be helpful.
