Tasks & duties

Importers may do some or all of the following:
-
find goods overseas
-
buy goods specifically for one client or sell goods to local wholesalers, retailers and manufacturers

work out costs and prices of products
-
decide on the method of freight and shipping
-
decide on the method of payment
-
check and keep records of stock
-
study current exchange rates
-
may prepare marketing material
-
may consult with trade organisations and/or Chambers of Commerce
-
may consult with customs brokers for clearance through customs or may organise it themselves
-
may sell products directly to the public
Skills & knowledge
Importers need to have:
- knowledge of the domestic and international market they are working in
- knowledge of customs laws
- knowledge of product safety and regulations
- knowledge of other cultures and their businesses
- good sales and marketing skills
- budgeting, financial and maths skills
- good written and oral communication skills
- decision-making ability
- computer skills
Entry requirements
There are no specific entry requirements to become an importer, but employers prefer that you have had experience in sales and marketing with a shipping company or customs broking firm, in business management, or in working with computers.
Training on the job
Skills are gained on the job. Importers can attend courses and seminars to update their knowledge.
