Translator
Tasks & duties

Translators may do some or all of the following:

read material from the source language and rewrite it in the required (target) language
-
check that the original meaning and feeling of the text is not lost
-
ensure that technical terms are correctly translated
-
proofread and edit other translators' work
-
discuss clients' translation requirements and give quotations for services provided
-
research the meaning of words and terminology using dictionaries and the Internet
-
use computer-aided translation tools
-
may converse with clients in their own language
Skills & knowledge
Translators need to have:
-
good language and communication skills
-
in-depth knowledge of written English language
-
good knowledge of at least one other language and culture
-
good writing skills
-
research skills
-
sound general knowledge
-
organisational ability and good time-management skills
-
computer skills
Knowledge of Maori language may be useful for translators working in New Zealand. Translators may also need small business management skills if they operate their own business.
Entry requirements
There are no specific entry requirements to become a translator. However, it is useful to have a Bachelor of Arts in languages and linguistics, and a graduate diploma in translation, or accreditation at the professional level from the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters Australia (NAATI).
Secondary education
A tertiary entrance qualification is required to enter further training. Useful secondary school subjects include English, languages, history and geography.
Training on the job
Most skills are gained on the job, but translators are encouraged to continue to improve their skills by attending courses and gaining NAATI accreditation.
Useful experience
Useful experience for translators includes experience living or working overseas and studying language courses.
