Meter Reader
Tasks & duties

Meter readers may do some or all of the following:
-
read all the meters listed in a given area (a meter round)
-
enter meter readings into a hand-held computer
-
check meter numbers and report any broken seals or damage
-
update client addresses and meter locations
-
respond to customer enquiries when appropriate or direct them to a customer service centre
-
download information recorded on meter rounds onto an office computer
-
prepare for each meter round
-
report broken or lost house or office keys
-
advise of dogs on a property or damage done to a property while working
-
immediately report anything suspicious
-
conduct surveys
Skills & knowledge

Meter readers need to have:
-
knowledge of the streets and meters in their area
-
knowledge of arrangements for access to customers' properties, including how to use burglar alarms
-
knowledge of electricity, gas and water distribution systems and terminology
-
record-keeping skills
-
problem-solving skills
-
communication and listening skills
-
customer service skills, as they deal with a wide range of customers
-
technical and computer skills, as they use a variety of electronic equipment
Entry requirements
To become a meter reader you need to have a driver's licence, and must not have a criminal record.
Secondary education
There are no specific secondary education requirements, although three years of secondary education is preferred by some employers.
Training on the job
Skills are gained on the job. Employers may organise a variety of training courses for meter readers including customer service, stress management and first aid.
Useful experience
Useful experience for meter readers includes any work involving contact with the public.
