Civil Engineering Technician
Tasks & duties

Civil engineering technicians may do some or all of the following:
-
work from the directions given by clients or engineers
-
survey and measure sites
-
prepare construction details and drawings
-
calculate the cost of the work
-
prepare timetables
-
check and report on progress
-
report and discuss problems with engineers
-
liaise with clients, contractors and subcontractors about various aspects of projects
-
liaise with members of the public
Skills & knowledge
Civil engineering technicians need to have:
-
knowledge of building methods and materials
-
knowledge of civil engineering
-
knowledge of physics and maths
-
skill in analysing and interpreting information such as client requirements, plans and designs
-
computer skills, including the ability to use computer-aided design (CAD) software
-
knowledge of the resource-consent process
-
knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Resource Management Act, the New Zealand Building Code, local by-laws and town planning regulations
-
problem-solving skills
-
planning and organisational skills
-
good communication skills
-
writing skills for producing reports
Entry requirements
To become a civil engineering technician you need a Diploma in Engineering or an equivalent diploma.
Some companies offer cadetships which enable people to train on the job and study part-time for a Diploma in Engineering (to become qualified engineering technicians).
Secondary education
To enter tertiary training, Sixth Form Certificate or NCEA equivalent maths, science and technology subjects are needed.
Registration
Some employers prefer civil engineering technicians who are registered with the Engineering Associates Registration Board and/or are members of the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ).
Useful experience
Useful experience for civil engineering technicians includes work in the building construction industry, draughting or engineering work.
