First Aid Tutor
Tasks & duties

First aid tutors may do some or all of the following:

teach first aid skills such as cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

teach people how to assist in emergency situations
-
teach people how to treat injuries such as sprains, burns or poisoning
-
organise courses in first aid
-
develop new teaching methods
-
maintain first aid training equipment
-
book first aid courses for clients
-
write instruction manuals about first aid techniques
Skills & knowledge
First aid tutors need to have:
-
first aid skills
-
knowledge of first aid and resuscitation techniques
-
knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the human body
-
knowledge of the equipment used in first aid
-
teaching skills and the ability to work with groups of varying ability
-
understanding of different cultures
-
good communication and presentation skills
-
good administrative skills
-
ability to operate equipment such as video recorders, overhead projectors and slide projectors
-
organisational ability
Entry requirements
To become a first aid tutor you need to have a:
-
Certificate in Adult Teaching (CAT) or equivalent
-
relevant first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate
Many employers prefer first aid tutors to come from a health or teaching-related background.
Secondary education
At least three years of secondary education is preferred, and useful subjects include biology and health.
Training on the job
First aid tutors must keep up to date with clinical developments in their field. They attend workshops and courses to upgrade their skills and knowledge.
Registration
First aid tutors usually need to be registered as:
-
a teacher (if you are a qualified teacher)
-
a medical practitioner (if you hold a general practising certificate)
-
a training provider (if you are self-employed as a training provider)
Useful experience
Useful experience for first aid tutors includes work in any role involving first aid, such as:
-
health care assistant
-
army medic
Experience teaching or speaking in front of a group of people is also useful.
