Audiometrist

Audiometrists conduct hearing assessments, fit hearing aids and assist people with impaired hearing.

 

Tasks & duties

Audiometrists may do some or all of the following:

  • conduct hearing tests using specialised equipment
  • discuss test results with patients and their families
  • take ear impressions for hearing aid moulds
  • prescribe, select and fit hearing aids
  • provide follow-up support to patients
  • advise patients, families and employers about hearing, hearing loss and hearing aids
  • repair hearing aids and supply hearing aid batteries
  • make custom-moulded earplugs and noise attenuators (reducers)

 

Skills & knowledge

Audiometrists need to have: 

  • knowledge of different hearing problems (such as glue ear) and their treatment
  • knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the ear and the hearing process
  • knowledge of sound amplification
  • knowledge of how to use hearing aids
  • knowledge of digital processing
  • problem-solving and analytical skills
  • excellent communication skills
  • organisational and time management skills
  • computer and technical skills
  • Some knowledge of sign language is useful

 

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements to become an audiometrist, and skills are gained on the job under the supervision of an audiologist or an experienced audiometrist.

 

Secondary education

Four years of secondary education is preferred and useful subjects include physics and biology.

 

Training on the job

Audiometrists may complete short courses or extramural study while working. Many audiometrists study towards a Certificate in Audiometric Assessment through TAFE NSW OTEN (a distance vocational education and training provider in Australia). This is a two year correspondence course. To get their qualification, students need to complete two years of clinical practice with supervision. 

 

Useful experience

Useful experience for audiometrists includes nursing, occupational health nursing, social work, teaching, or work with children or people with disabilities.
